Events6 min read

The 2027 Viehscheid in Oberstdorf – the traditional autumn cattle drive – is expected to take place on Monday 13 September 2027, at the sorting ground by the Nordic Zentrum in the Ried. Around 1,000 young cattle, five alpine pastures, up to 20,000 visitors and, towering above it all, the peaks of the Allgäu High Alps: Oberstdorf celebrates one of the largest cattle drives in the Allgäu. Here you can read how the day unfolds in the Ried, what happened in 2026 and where to stay in and around Oberstdorf.

When is the Viehscheid in Oberstdorf in 2027?

Oberstdorf sticks to a fixed date: the Viehscheid is traditionally held on 13 September. It is only moved if that falls on a Sunday, as in 2026, when the celebration took place on Saturday 12 September. In 2027, 13 September is a Monday, so we expect it on Monday 13 September 2027. As soon as the municipality confirms the date, you will find it here. It is best to plan for the whole weekend from 11 to 13 September: on 11 September Bad Hindelang holds its big Viehscheid, and in 2026 the Oberstdorf district of Schöllang brought its herds down the day before Oberstdorf.

Looking back: the Viehscheid Oberstdorf 2026

On Saturday 12 September 2026, around 1,000 animals returned to the valley from the Bierenwang, Taufersberg, Haldenwang, Rappenalpe and Biberalpe pastures. From about 9 am the first herds arrived at the sorting ground by the Nordic Zentrum in the Ried, with one alpine pasture following another until midday. In front of the festival marquee, spectators had the best view of the sorting, during which each animal is called out and handed over to its owner.

The day before, Schöllang had already welcomed around 600 head of cattle from four alpine pastures. In Oberstdorf itself the brass band then played in the festival marquee, with Scheidwurst (the traditional Viehscheid sausage) and beer by the litre stein. For traffic: shuttle buses from 7:45 am from the bus station, parking at P1 to P3 at the entrance to the village, and the Birgsauer Straße was closed from 7 to 10 am for the cattle drive.
