Ski Resorts in the Allgäu Compared: Which One Suits You?
Freshly groomed pistes, crisp winter air and a Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake) at a mountain hut for lunch: when snow covers the peaks, the ski season begins in the Allgäu. From World Cup slopes to relaxed family mountains, we introduce you to the most beautiful ski resorts in the Allgäu – and show you where to stay for your ski holiday.
Oberstdorf: world-class winter sports
Around Oberstdorf, Germany's southernmost municipality, there are several ski areas: the snow-sure Fellhorn-Kanzelwand with its link to the Kleinwalsertal, the Nebelhorn with one of the longest valley runs in Germany and the family-friendly Söllereck. On top of that, Oberstdorf hosts the Four Hills Tournament (Vierschanzentournee), and you can feel it throughout the town.
Family-friendly: Ofterschwang-Gunzesried & the Hörnerbahn
Between Sonthofen and Blaichach lies the Ofterschwang-Gunzesried ski area, with wide pistes and the World Cup slope on the Ofterschwanger Horn. Just a few minutes away, the Hörnerbahn in Bolsterlang takes you to relaxed runs – ideal for families and anyone who likes to take it easy.
Oberstaufen: Hündle and Imberg
In the Westallgäu, the activity mountains Hündle and Imberg-Steibis around Oberstaufen tempt you with family-friendly pistes and a glorious panorama of the Nagelfluhkette. After skiing, you can relax in the Schroth spa town or at the Aquaria leisure pool.
Snow-sure: Grasgehren on the Riedbergpass
The high-altitude Grasgehren ski area on the Riedbergpass is considered particularly snow-sure and is quickly reached from Sonthofen and the Gunzesrieder Tal – a lovely tip for sunny ski days above the clouds.
Cross-country skiing & winter walking
Cross-country skiers are well catered for in the Allgäu too: groomed trails run through the Illertal, the Ostrachtal and the peaceful Gunzesrieder Tal. Add to that snowy winter walking paths and toboggan runs for relaxed days away from the pistes.
